Ed Green and Angie May took over in 2019, and locals still line up for the same reason they always did.
Breakfast runs all day here, which is half the appeal. Order the Huevos Rancheros, and you get crispy corn tortillas, black beans, ranchero sauce, and sunny-side-up eggs, with avocado on top. The Buttermilk Pancakes come with Michigan maple syrup, and you can pile on blueberries and lemon curd if you want to make a morning of it.
The kitchen makes a lot from scratch. The corned beef hash starts with house-made brisket, and the biscuits and gravy use biscuits baked in house. Green and May ran a busy breakfast diner in Berkeley before they landed here, so they know how to move a full room.
You will find The Jefferson Market at 609 W Jefferson St, the corner spot facing Bach Elementary on the Old West Side. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 8 am to 2 pm, and it closes Monday and Tuesday. Here is the insider part. The space is small, the seating is tight, and there are no laptops allowed, so it fills up fast on weekend mornings. If you can, go early at 8am or plan to wait, or call ahead for carry-out at 734-665-6666. If it’s a nice day, ask to sit outside in the back. They have a quaint outdoor patio that is perfect for enjoying a delicious breakfast in one of the best parts of town.
