🚲️ Campus Student Bike Shop: After more than 20 years on Maynard Street, Campus Student Bike Shop will close its doors next weekend following the passing of longtime owner Bill Loy. Loy, who had operated bike shops around Ann Arbor since the late 1960s, was a fixture of the local cycling community. Loy opened his first bike shop in town on Catherine Street in 1968.

🌲 1,000 Trees: Last week, City Council approved a $476,000 contract to plant 1,000 new trees along city streets. The work will start this fall and continue through the spring. Officials say the new trees will help absorb stormwater, improve air quality, and support the city’s long-term A2Zero climate goals.

Ann Arbor District Library
📚️ Akako G. Shins: It’s a groundhog, it’s a woodchuck, it’s a marmot, it’s the Ann Arbor District Library’s newly launched mascot. Named Akako G. Shins (which is derived from the Ojibwe word akakojiishiins meaning “little groundhog”), they work at the library and love to come to AADL events. Expect to see more Akako G. Shins around town.

University of Michigan
🏠️ Local Legends: U of M released a cool map showing where 42 famous alumni lived when they were on campus. From President Gerald Ford’s house on Geddes and Tom Brady’s apartment on McKinley to Madonna’s place on South U, check it out - you might be living on some famous alums’ old stomping grounds. Don’t worry, I’m sure they didn’t get their security deposit back either.

🐐 Fighting Invasive Species: If AI is taking human jobs, goats are taking herbicide jobs. Across Michigan, goats are taking on invasive species one bite at a time. From Washtenaw County farms to northern pastures, hired herds are being used to clear out unwanted plants like glossy buckthorn, multiflora rose, and poison ivy. Farmers say the four-legged landscapers are cheaper, greener, and occasionally stubborn, but worth every penny.
