🆕 Openings and Closings: Oddly a lot of business news last week. 6 stories to know:

🍺 Collegiate Drinks: With an online survey, U of M is seeking input from students, faculty, and, alumni over the idea of selling alcohol at select athletic venues, including Yost Ice Arena, Crisler Center, and Michigan Stadium. This comes after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill in July, lifting the statewide ban on alcohol sales at public university stadiums. If approved, alcohol sales could start as early as January 2024. Michigan State, Western Michigan, and Grand Valley State have already begun selling alcohol at sporting events.

🐈‍⬛ Abandoned Cats: The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is providing shelter, care, and attention to 17 cats found abandoned in a parking lot near Owl Creek Apartments in Ann Arbor. The cats, aged between 5 months and 5 years, are in varying states of health, some with severe medical issues. HSHV has opened an investigation into the incident.

👨‍🎨 Michigan Mansion Monets: Three Claude Monet paintings valued at over $45 million were destroyed in a 2022 house fire in Pentwater Township. The incident has led to ongoing legal disputes between the owners and their insurance company, Lloyd’s of London, over reimbursement for the destroyed artworks. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

🏠 3D-Printed Home: Michigan's first 3D-printed home is nearly complete. Located in Detroit’s Islandview neighborhood, the two-bedroom house will be listed at $224,500 (notably higher than Detroit's median home sale price of $55,000).

🛒 From Groceries to Insurance: Through a partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Meijer is entering the health insurance market. The new Medicare Plus Blue PPO + Meijer plan offers enrollees a $660 allowance for health-related items and foods, usable at Meijer's 120 Michigan locations. The enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, with policies effective Jan. 1, 2024. This marks Meijer's first foray into health insurance, with the potential for more health-related initiatives in the future.
