Kids cool off at Ann Arbor's first splash pad
π Ann Arbor's First Splash Pad Just Opened
Tree Town has plenty of pools and a river, but never a splash pad. Until now. The city's first one is open at Bicentennial Park on the southeast side, running 9am to 9pm. The star is a giant bucket that fills up and dumps on whoever is brave enough to stand under it. The official ribbon-cutting is Friday, July 10. WEMU
Ann Arbor Jaycees' annual 4th of July Parade returns to downtown
πΊπΈ Your Fourth of July Game Plan
Saturday is the big one. The Jaycees Fourth of July Parade steps off at 10am downtown, starting at State and William and looping through Liberty and Fifth. It's the 36th year. Early birds can run the Firecracker 5K at 8am from Liberty and Fourth, which has a rucking division, a flag-carrying division, and yes, a hot dog eating contest (four dogs in 76 seconds, then you still run the 5K). For fireworks, head to Whitmore Lake on Friday at dusk, the Social Vines vineyard out in Dexter on Saturday night, or Ypsilanti's Depot Town, home of one of the oldest Fourth of July parades in the state. Dusty May departs as three Wolverines go in the NBA Draft's top 15
π A Wild Week for Michigan Basketball
Two big shakeups for the reigning national champs. First, head coach Dusty May is leaving Ann Arbor to take over the Dallas Mavericks, just weeks after summer practices began, throwing the Wolverines into a coaching search with rosters already set and the transfer portal closed. Then came the payoff for his title run: Michigan made history Tuesday as Morez Johnson Jr. (No. 9, Mavericks), Yaxel Lendeborg (No. 11, Warriors), and Aday Mara (No. 12, Thunder) became the first trio of Wolverines ever taken in the top 15 of a single NBA draft. Johnson, fittingly, lands with May in Dallas. The Athletic

The 1994 FIFA World Cup at the Pontiac Silverdome
β½ The Summer the World Cup Came to Michigan
With the 2026 World Cup playing across North America right now, here's a fun bit of state history. In 1994, the Pontiac Silverdome became the first indoor stadium to ever host World Cup matches. The catch: you cannot grow grass under a roof. "The roof of the Silverdome, which was translucent, only allowed 20% of the sun rays that are needed to enable grass to grow." So Michigan State researchers grew the turf out in California, trucked it back in refrigerated trailers, and pieced together 1,850 hexagonal chunks of sod by hand. Nearly 80,000 people packed in for Brazil and Sweden. Michigan Public
