Arb Peony Garden Expected To Bloom Mid-Week

Morning, Ann Arbor! And Happy Memorial Day! I hope your day is spent by a lake not working, and this is the only email you read today.
Early P.S. - A lot of fun, multi-million dollar houses hit the market, so the real estate section will be twice as large this week. Because obviously we’re all in the market for a new 7-figure home.

💐 Peony Watch: Memorial Day is the official start of Peony season at the Arb. If you’re new to town or a student sticking around for your first summer in A2, you’re in for a treat.
For more than a century, each spring, the Arb transforms into a Peony paradise. This year alone, more than 75,000 spectators will flock to the Arb to see 800+ Peonies bloom. So you can time your visits/date nights accordingly, the Arb has a bloom tracker on their site (on Friday, 5% of flowers had bloomed). Peak bloom is expected mid-week this week.
Still not convinced the gardens are worth seeing? Maybe a 2.5-minute hype video with Lord of the Rings-esque music in the background will change your mind.

MCGC will be the league’s seventh team and first expansion team. The ownership group is led by Detroit Lions co-owners Sheila and Michael Hamp (plus Broncos owner Rob Walton). The team is expected to join in 2027.

🏳️⚧️ Ban on Transgender Girls in K-12 Sports: Last week, the Republican-controlled Michigan House passed two bills - HB 4066 and HB 4469 - that would bar transgender girls from girls’ K-12 teams and allow lawsuits against schools that don’t comply. Both measures hinge on “sex assigned at birth” per original birth certificates and carry a two-year damages window for harmed parties. It’s unlikely the bills will ever be signed into law, as they would need to pass the Democrat-controlled Senate and be approved by Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

MDOT
💬 Toll Text Scams: Have you received a text requesting money for an unpaid toll? MDOT wants you to know it is a scam. As people travel for Memorial Day Weekend, billboards in the state are warning drivers of scam text messages regarding unpaid tolls. The scam text messages mimic the MDOT website. Dana Nessel, Michigan’s attorney general, wants Michiganders to know three things:
Government agencies will never request personal information through email, phone, or text
Government agencies will never demand money through email, phone, or text. Instead, they will mail a notice and offer payment options.
Government agencies will not ask for or take payments via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or a payment app.

🐾 “Credible” Bigfoot Sighting: Last week, a father and son bow-fishing in Monroe County say they startled a bear-sized, gorilla-like creature in a swamp, then watched it run off through the brush - an encounter the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization deemed “credible.” Matthew Moneymaker from Finding Bigfoot on Animal Planet classified the viewing as a “class A encounter.” Perhaps extra likely because there were many deer and cattails around, known favorites of Bigfoot.
