🗻 Base Camp Restaurant: This Wednesday, Base Camp, a new restaurant serving Himalayan cuisine from India, Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan is set to open at 5060 Jackson Road (the old Fresh Forage location). Owned and operated by Tasi Sherpa, an experienced Everest climber, Base Camp aims to bring the communal atmosphere of mountain base camps to Ann Arbor.

🚌 School Bus Tech: Last week, by a 4-3 vote, the Ann Arbor School Board approved a $361,514 purchase of five new security cameras for each of its 131 school buses. Four of the cameras will be installed inside the bus while one will be installed on the external stop arm. This external camera will automatically catch cars that do not stop when the bus’ flashers and stop arm are activated (and the recordings will be passed on to the police).

☕️ Vertex Expands: Vertex Coffee announced last week they were opening a second location at 307 N River Street in Ypsilanti (the old Cultivate Coffee and Tap House space). Vertex plans to open the new location this spring and serve coffee, alcohol-free drinks, and some light food.

🏀 SI Resort: After facing criticism from the public and City Council, Sports Illustrated Resorts has withdrawn its proposal for a sports-themed hotel and conference center in Ashley Streets’ Kline Lot. Despite the setback, the CEO remains optimistic about finding an alternative location in Ann Arbor, suggesting the city's outskirts as possible sites. The future of the Kline Lot, valued at nearly $17 million, now awaits City Council's decision on its development.

❄️ Woody the Woodchuck: In a weather-predicting rodent showdown, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring while Michigan’s Woody the Woodchuck predicted a late spring. Not to be a homer, but Punxsutawney Phil’s 30% accuracy rate doesn’t hold a candle to Woody the Woodchuck’s 70% accuracy rate.

🚗 Biden in the Mitten: Last week, President Biden visited Michigan to celebrate receiving the UAW’s official endorsement. Before a potential rematch with Donald Trump, President Biden spoke about the importance of labor unions in building the middle class and the country’s economy. President Biden made history in September when he joined the UAW’s protest and became the first sitting president to join a picket line.

🍎 Michigan Teacher Shortage: To recruit and retain new teachers, Michigan schools are rolling out $10,000 signing bonuses, loan repayment programs, and paid student teaching positions.
