Bev's Bagels To Open Location On Liberty Street Next Year

Morning, Ann Arbor! Don’t even bother with today’s real estate section. Nothing exciting to see there.

Just your run-of-the-mill Parisian-themed penthouse with “rare pieces from the Versace Estate”.

Boring.

🧁 Cinnaholic: 3 doors down (accidental early 2000s band reference), Cinnaholic (121 E. Liberty Street) announced they would be shutting down their Ann Arbor location this Wednesday. The vegan bakery first opened in Ann Arbor in January 2022. The franchise business will continue to serve Michigan customers from its Brighton location.

🏙️ Downtown Expansion: The City of Ann Arbor is considering expanding the boundaries of its Downtown Development Authority to include areas north of the current district. City Council approved an initial step to begin the process, citing potential infrastructure improvements as a benefit. A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for February 2 before any final decision is made.

🎉 Dimanche: Two award-winning Belgian companies merge puppetry, video, and mime for Dimanche, a visually stunning climate parable. Watch a family absurdly try to keep up appearances as nature's uncontrollable forces rage outside. This witty, tender portrait of ecological collapse is an inventive, captivating, and wonder-provoking piece of theatre.

👀 Neighborhood Crime Watch: The City of Ann Arbor plans to remove more than 600 Neighborhood Watch signs that remain from a long-defunct program. City officials say the signs have not been shown to reduce crime and may reinforce harmful stereotypes about who belongs in certain neighborhoods. The removal has already started and is expected to be complete by mid-July.

♟️ Chessboxing: Forget the Jake Paul fight, the only boxing this newsletter cares about is chessboxing. This year, James Canty III, a 33-year-old from Detroit, has been named the world champion in chessboxing’s super heavyweight division. Chessboxing competitors alternate between chess and boxing rounds until a winner is determined - by either knockout or checkmate. In a Rocky-style win, the American beat Russian Ivan Drago Evgenii Isaev to take the super heavyweight belt. With a checkmate, the Michigander won in the 5th round.

🏈 Michigan Football Tracker: Still not a lot of clarity on who’s the front-runner to be Michigan’s next head coach. Kalen DeBoer, Alabama’s head coach, won his playoff game last week (making it more likely that he stays with the Crimson Tide) and Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State’s head coach, signed a new 5-year deal with ASU. Here are top 5 candidates to be U of M’s next head coach according to Kalshi (a prediction market):

  1. Kyle Whittingham: Recently retired Utah head coach

  2. Jedd Fisch: Current Washington head coach

  3. Jeff Brohm: Current Louisville head coach

  4. Biff Poggi: Interim Michigan head coach

  5. Kalen DeBoer: Current Alabama head coach

It’s a tough time of the year to be shopping for a head coach.
