Juicy Kitchen To Be Closed For A Few Weeks Due To Freezer Fire

Morning, Ann Arbor! But especially good morning to Jett Parker, an 8-year-old from Muskegon, MI in the final round of the kids’ division of the USA Mullet Competition. The backstory of Jett’s mullet is a thing of beauty:

“I was 5 years old when I saw my first mullet. I went to the Pizza and Sub Shop in Muskegon and saw my dad’s friend, Tony. Tony’s mullet was glorious. All business in the front and a curly party in the back. Accompanied by some solid mutton chops and beard. Tony inspired me that very day to grow out my hair and have an even sweeter mullet than his. I started growing out my mullet in the fall of 2022. I’ve gotten so many compliments. Everyone loves a kid with a mullet! I’ve got my mom’s natural curls and my dad’s outgoing personality. It’s a deadly combination!”

Absolute legend.

🍳 Freezer Fire: Juicy Kitchen (1506 N Maple Road) is temporarily closed after a freezer fire caused $30,000 - $50,000 worth of damage inside the restaurant. Juicy Kitchen hopes to reopen in “a few weeks,” once they receive approval from the health department. Local businesses who purchase wholesale from Juicy Kitchen will also be impacted during the closure.

☀️ The Nameless Mobile Solar Power Station: City officials are asking for name submissions for their new mobile solar power station. At Friday’s Green Fair, Ann Arbor’s Office of Sustainability & Innovations unveiled the new shipping-container-style solar power station. Purchased for $333,000 from Jackson-based Sesame Solar, the 30-foot trailer has an 8-kilowatt solar array with 45 kilowatt hours of battery storage and hydrogen fuel cell backup, but no name. Locals can use this link to submit name suggestions.

🏢 10-Year Lease: Last week, the University of Michigan’s Board of Regents approved a 10-year lease and $16.5 million in renovations for second-floor office space at 401 E. Liberty St., formerly home to AI firm Coupa LLamasoft (and, long before that, Google’s downtown office). The 27,500-square-foot space will consolidate student and faculty services, with renovations set to wrap by fall 2026. No other tenants in the building (like Condado or Tios) will be affected.

National Weather Service

🌧️ Drought Watch: Much of the state’s Lower Peninsula is in the worst drought since 2012, with rainfall well under normal this year and rivers and streams running low. Cities including Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing and Traverse City are showing serious precipitation gaps, straining crops and increasing concern as harvest season nears. Experts say it’ll take multiple substantial rain events over several weeks to rebuild soil moisture and river flow.
