🎶 Sonic Lunch Line Up: Sonic Lunch, a free outdoor concert series that runs every Thursday in June, July, and August at Liberty Plaza, released its 2025 lineup. While many local favorites are returning, two large national names are also on the list - Mike Posner and Philip Phillips. Starting in June, Sonic Lunch previews will be a recurring section of the Michigander.

📚️ President Ono Resigns: After the shortest Presidential tenure in U of M history, Santa Ono has officially resigned from serving as President of the University of Michigan and accepted the same job at the University of Florida.

While the university will use the next year to find a permanent replacement, Demonico Grasso, the previous Chancellor of the University of Michigan–Dearborn, will serve as interim president.

🏈 Moore Football Suspensions: Last week, ESPN released a report stating U of M football head coach Sherrone Moore is expected to serve a two-game suspension this fall as part of the university’s self-imposed penalties for the Connor Stalions scouting scandal. Moore, who allegedly deleted text messages tied to the sign-stealing operation, will miss Michigan’s Week 3 and 4 games against Central Michigan and Nebraska. The NCAA could still impose additional sanctions, though this move may be an attempt to soften the blow ahead of a scheduled June 6 hearing.

💰️ The Economic Impact of Home Games: Last week, Destination Ann Arbor released a report on the economic impact of U of M home football games on the Ann Arbor economy. Things I found interesting:

  • The 2024 U-M football season generated $226.7 million in direct visitor spending from attendees residing outside Washtenaw County. On average, each home game contributed approximately $28 million in direct visitor spending to the local economy.

  • Spectators who traveled from outside Washtenaw County spent an average of $256.34

  • Spending by out-of-county visitors supported 2,198 local jobs, generated $12.9 million in tax revenue, and resulted in an estimated 100,496 hotel room nights

The next economic report from Destination Ann Arbor will be on the Art Fair this summer.

📚️ Dexter Bond Passes: Last Tuesday, Dexter voters approved a bond of $242 million for Dexter Community Schools. Dexter Superintendent Christopher Timmis said, “It’s been a long process. The community developed the proposal and refined it, and it’s great to see it pass and put it into motion for our kids.”

The bond will fund a change to Mill Creek Middle School to specifically serve just fifth and sixth-graders. It will also create a new Creekside Intermediate School (a building for just seventh and eighth graders), a theater for students/the community to use, and many other smaller projects throughout the district.
