Raising Cane's To Open Ann Arbor Location In April

Morning, Ann Arbor! Today and tomorrow are going to be cold. Like cold, cold. Like mandatory long johns and warm your car up for 20 minutes, cold. Like cancel the college football championship game tonight and let Michigan be national champs for another year, cold.

Just a thought.

🐔 Raising Cane’s: Between Slim Chickens and Raising Cane’s, 2025 is shaping up to be the year of fried chicken in Ann Arbor. What was once just an Instagram rumor, has been confirmed. Raising Cane’s will open at 1116 South University (Kiddy corner from the UofM arch, also the bottom floor of a new student apartment building – South Vic Village). The new Raising Cane’s will open on April 15th.

If you’ve never had Cane’s, just memorize the line “Caniac combo - no coleslaw, extra Texas toast” and you’ll be set.

BO’s Bagels

🥯 NYC Bagels: Not to be outdone by fried chicken, authentic NYC bagels are also coming to town. BO’s Bagels, a Harlem-based bagel shop that opened in 2017 and was recently named a top 5 bagel in the city, is also opening on the bottom floor of South Vic Village (1116 South University). The future Raising Cane’s neighbor is run by a University of Michigan grad and her husband. No exact opening date has been announced.

🧑‍🎨 Interactive Art: A new art display, Oscillation, opened last weekend at Liberty Plaza (310 S Division St). The display is an interactive exhibit, where giant glowing crystals function kind of like an instrument. They play different sounds based on how far a person is from the crystals and glow different colors as viewers move and dance around. Here’s a helpful video of the display when it was in New York City.

💰️ Perfect Attendance Pays: Detroit Public Schools is piloting a new program to improve student attendance, “Perfect Attendance Pays!” The program, which started in January, gives students a $200 gift card for every two weeks of perfect attendance. While it is still early on in the program, there has been some early success – “1,800 more students in the Detroit Public Schools Community District have had perfect attendance since they returned from the winter break than at this time last year.” DPS has chronic absenteeism, with 66% of students chronically absent in the 2023-2024 school year.

🍕 Half Pizza, Half Golf: Hometown Pizza/Under Par Simulator, a new pizza restaurant and golf simulator business opened on Saturday at 5060 Jackson Road (Suite G). The front of the building will serve hand-tossed pizzas and calzones while the back will have three golf simulators, bar-style seating, and lots of TVs.

The ol’ mullet layout - business in the front, party in the back.

Bridge Michigan

🚗 Rejected Plates: Bridge Michigan has used its journalism powers for comedy gold - by submitting a Freedom of Information Act request to the Michigan Department of State to release all of the custom license plates they rejected last year. Some of the license plates that were denied:

  • 0HIOSUX

  • 0CRAP

  • WEEDMAN

  • 2DAMFUN

As you can imagine, these were the tamer ones that felt newsletter-safe. If you’re curious about the other 24,976 that were rejected (from last year and years past), you can find the full list here.
