📆 July Events: Here’s what’s going on this month:

Apple Maps

🚓 Vision Zero: Last Wednesday, in just 90 minutes, police pulled over 34 cars for speeding on Packard near Platt Road. As part of the larger Vision Zero initiative (the city’s plan to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries resulting from traffic crashes) Police have identified 3 corridors where dangerous driving behavior needs to be changed and will therefore be monitored more closely:

  • Washtenaw Corridor: From Geddes Avenue to Huron Parkway

  • Packard Corridor: From Fifth Avenue to Turnberry Drive

  • Jackson Corridor: From Burwood Avenue to Gralake Avenue

🏀 WNBA Comeback: Last week, Detroit was officially awarded a new WNBA team. As part of a 3 team expansion plan, Cleveland will launch a new team in 2028, Detroit in 2029, and Philadelphia in 2030. Games will be played at Little Caesars Arena, while the ownership group is pledging a new, dedicated practice facility that doubles as a community youth-sports complex.

Siena Heights

📚 Siena Heights University: After 105 years in operation, Siena Heights University, a Catholic liberal-arts college based in Adrian, Michigan, will close down after the 2025-26 school year. Citing mounting financial and enrollment pressures, school leaders released a statement saying long-term survival was impossible for the ~2,300 student campus. Its closure leaves just three Catholic colleges operating in Michigan (Detroit Mercy, Madonna University and Aquinas College).

📜 Lansing Gridlock: Michigan lawmakers have passed just six bills in six months - the fewest in any session since 2005. With a Democratic-led Senate and Republican-led House, common ground seems hard to come by. Lawmakers will reconvene July 15, but for now Michigan’s divided government is on track for its quietest legislative year in decades.
