Zingerman's Launches Themed Skis and Snowboards

Tuesday, January 30: 10 hours and 5 minutes of daylight, Coach Harbaugh leaves, front yard solar panel and rejected license plates

Morning, Ann Arbor! It may not feel like it, but the days are slowly getting longer. On Saturday, Ann Arbor will have 10 hours and 5 minutes of daylight - an hour more daylight than A2 had on December 21. There’s light (literally) at the end of the tunnel.

⛷️ Townies on the Slopes: Zingerman’s has announced a collaboration with manufacturer Gilson Snow to develop custom Zingerman’s-themed skis and snowboards. The skis are available on Gilson’s website for $725 and the snowboards are available for $645.

🏈 Coach Moore: After bringing Michigan a National Championship, Coach Jim Harbaugh is returning to the NFL to be the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers (Harbaugh played for the Chargers in 1999 and 2000). A day after the announcement, U of M named Offensive Coordinator Sherrone Moore as the new head coach. Coach Moore was the active head coach for 5 games last season while Coach Harbaugh was suspended. Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter and Strength Coach Ben Herbert will follow Coach Harbaugh to the Chargers.

☀️ Front Yard Solar: Last Monday, Ann Arbor City Council voted unanimously (9-0) to lift a city-wide ban on front yard solar panels (a policy in place since 2017). Residents will now be permitted to install ground-mounted solar arrays in their front yards, so long as they are 10 feet back from the property line.

🎤 State of the State: On Wednesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer gave her sixth State of the State address. Governor Whitmer covered several housing, education, and economic policy proposals to solve some of Michigan’s largest problems: attracting younger residents and creating higher-income jobs. Key proposals include a $1.4 billion investment in affordable housing, universal preschool, free community college, and family caregiver tax credits. Here’s a link to watch the entire 56-minute address.

🚗 Rejected License Plates: For the second year in a row, Metro Times has used its journalism powers for comedy gold - by submitting a Freedom of Information Act request to the Michigan Department of State to release all of the custom license plates they rejected last year. Some of the license plates that were denied:

  • F4RT

  • 2SEXC4U

  • GOTBEER

  • G2POOP
